Obama’s No Reagan

RNC Communications - June 9, 2011

Obama Thinks He Can Follow Reagan’s Playbook To Re-Election, But His Approval On The Economy Is Lagging Far Behind The Gipper

Obama’s Been Reading Up On The Reagan Playbook:

Obama And His Team Have Been Looking To Reagan’s Reelection Campaign “As A Possible Template” For 2012. “The president and his team have looked to Ronald Reagan’s presidency as a possible template for their reelection fortunes. During his first two years in office, Reagan weathered a deep recession that sent unemployment even higher than that which the country has experienced during the current downturn.” (Dan Balz, “Obama Gets An Economic Jolt,” The Washington Post, 6/4/11)

But By This Point In 1983, Americans Were Already Regaining Faith In The Economy, While Obama’s Economy Continues To Disappoint:

1983: “Forty-Three Percent Now Think The Economy Is Getting Better…” (ABC’s  “World News Tonight,” 5/18/83)

2011: Only 24 Percent Of Americans Think The Economy Is Getting Better. “31% of Americans think the economy is getting worse; while that number is down from 39% lastmonth, it is higher than at other points in the past year. Just 24% think it is improving.” (CBS News,  1024 A, MoE 3%, 6/3-7/11)

  • ABC-Washington Post Poll: Nine In 10 Americans “Rate The Economy In Negative Terms.” “By 2 to 1, Americans say the country is pretty seriously on the wrong track, and nine in 10 continue to rate the economy in negative terms.” (Dan Balz and Jon Cohen, “Obama Loses Bin Laden Bounce; Romney On The Move Among GOP Contenders,” The Washington Post, 6/7/11)

1983: “And Along With That Rising Optimism, Approval Of Mr. Reagan's Handling Of The Economy Has Risen To Forty-Eight Percent, Equal To The Number Of Those Who Still Disapprove Of His Economic Stewardship.” (ABC’s  “World News Tonight,” 5/18/83)

2011: 59 Percent Of Americans Disapprove Of How Obama Is Handling The Economy. (ABC News/The Washington Post, 1002 A, MoE 3.5%, 6/2-5/11)

  • Washington Post-ABC News Poll: “Americans’ Disapproval Of How [Obama] Is Handling The Nation’s Economy And The Deficit Has Reached New Highs.” “The public opinion boost President Obama received after the killing of Osama bin Laden has dissipated, and Americans’ disapproval of how he is handling the nation’s economy and the deficit has reached new highs, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.” (Dan Balz and Jon Cohen, “Obama Loses Bin Laden Bounce; Romney On The Move Among GOP Contenders,” The Washington Post, 6/7/11)
