RE: Desperate Times, White Nationalist Measures

Michael Ahrens - October 28, 2017

This morning, The Charlottesville Daily Progress said Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam’s decision to “exploit [the Charlottesville tragedy] for political advantage is stomach-turning.”

“This one hits very close to home, because it politicizes the Charlottesville tragedy of Aug. 11-12. … We don’t need state candidates trying to use our pain to their political advantage.

… Mr. Gillespie did, however, denounce the white supremacists — before the rally ever took place.

‘Having a right to spew vile hate does not make it right,’ he said early on Aug. 12.  ‘… These displays have no place in our commonwealth and the mentality on display is rejected by the decent, thoughtful and compassionate fellow Virginians I see every day.’

... But to take the tragedy of Charlottesville and exploit it for political advantage is stomach-turning.

The momentum is with Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie as polls tighten in Virginia – a state that went for Hillary Clinton by over 5 points, where Republicans haven’t won statewide in 8 years.

And the Democrats’ desperation is on full display. CNN’s Brian Fallon just parroted the same offensive attack that Democratic candidate Ralph Northam is using in his last-minute campaign mailers.

CNN contributor, Hillary Clinton spokesman

Here’s what voters are reading about it as Election Day quickly approaches:

Richmond Times-Dispatch: “[Virginia Democrats] have distributed a mailer of their own, seeking to tie Republican gubernatorial nominee Ed Gillespie to the white nationalists who rampaged through Charlottesville in August. That isn’t merely a reach. It’s practically libel. Gillespie has repeatedly and passionately condemned white supremacists and other creatures that have crawled out from under the alt-right rock."

The Roanoke Times: “Gillespie himself has said and done exactly the right things here. Vote against Gillespie because of his views on tax policy, if you want, but don’t vote against him because of anything related to Charlottesville. He and Northam are on the same side here.”

The Washington Post: “Gillespie has repeatedly condemned the white nationalists behind the Charlottesville protest.”

But despite the widespread criticism, Northam has doubled down on his unhinged attack. Virginians know the Democrats reek of irresponsible desperation, and voters won’t be rewarding them come Election Day.
