RE: hey Tom, call your lawyer

Michael Ahrens - October 26, 2017

Quick follow-up… To the surprise of The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty, Tom Perez just told her he didn’t know about the DNC-funded Russian dossier “until a few days ago.” Huh?

New from CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski: DNC chair Tom Perez: I learned about DNC's role in dossier 'a few days ago'

KAREN TUMULTY: So the DNC had this information before the election but decided not to go forward with what was in the dossier. Is that because –

TOM PEREZ: I’m not sure I understand –

TUMULTY: First of all, did the DNC actually know what they… they paid the lawyer who commissioned the dossier. Did the DNC know what was in it?

PEREZ: Well, again, you’re going to have to ask folks who were at the DNC at that time.

TUMULTY: But surely you’ve asked.

PEREZ: Well, no. I mean I learned about the dossier a few days ago.

TUMULTY: How is that possible?

PEREZ: Well because you hire a lawyer and we hire lawyers all the time who hire third party vendors to do their work and so we knew that we were paying for opposition research at the DNC but we didn’t ask questions about who they’re hiring in the context of doing the research.

DNC Chair Tom Perez says he doesn’t know anything about funding the phony Russian dossier. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is saying the same thing.

But why can’t Perez just call up his lawyers? They’re at the same firm the DNC used to pay Fusion GPS to compile the dossier. Perez has paid them at least $1.3M since he became chair.

And while he’s got them on the phone, they can figure out how to respond to the Campaign Legal Center’s new FEC complaint alleging that the DNC and Clinton campaign “effectively [hid] these payments from public scrutiny, contrary to the requirements of federal law.”

The $1.3 Million Reason To Be Skeptical Of The Perez/DNC Denial About Fusion GPS

THE DNC UNDER TOM PEREZ CONTINUED TO RETAIN PERKINS COIE

Is The DNC Saying Its Own Law Firm Withheld Information From Tom Perez And The New Leadership?

According To The Washington Post, The DNC And The Hillary Clinton Campaign Helped Fund Fusion GPS’s Research Into Donald Trump. “The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.” (Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman, “Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid For Research That Led To Russia Dossier,” The Washington Post, 10/24/17)

  • Perkins Coie Retained Fusion GPS On Behalf Of The Clinton Campaign And The Democratic National Committee. “Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the company in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC.” (Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman, “Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid For Research That Led To Russia Dossier,” The Washington Post, 10/24/17)

“The Clinton Campaign And The DNC, Through The Law Firm, Continued To Fund Fusion GPS’s Research Through The End Of October 2016, Days Before Election Day.” (Adam Entous, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman, “Clinton Campaign, DNC Paid For Research That Led To Russia Dossier,” The Washington Post, 10/24/17)

DNC Communications Director Xochitl Hinojosa: Tom Perez And The New Leadership At The DNC Were Not “Aware That Perkins Coie Was Working With The Organization.” “DNC communications director Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement Tuesday: ‘Tom Perez and the new leadership of the DNC were not involved in any decision-making regarding Fusion GPS, nor were they aware that Perkins Coie was working with the organization.’” (Eli Watkins and Dan Merica, “Clinton Campaign, DNC Helped Fund Dossier Research,” CNN, 10/25/17)

  • Tom Perez Became The New DNC Chair On February 25, 2017. “After a difficult 2016 campaign that saw them lose the White House, both chambers of Congress and state houses across the country, Democrats elected Tom Perez on Saturday to lead the Democratic National Committee and rebuild the party.” (Alex Seitz-Wald, “DNC Race: Tom Perez Becomes DNC Chair In Close Election Victory,” NBC News, 2/25/17)
