The Minnesota GOP Chairwoman, Jennifer Carnahan, Called On Franken To Cancel The Event. "This horrific photo posted by Comedian Kathy Griffin is both shocking and unacceptable. This is deeply disturbing and disconcerting. I am calling on Senator Al Franken to cancel the controversial event he has planned with Kathy Griffin on July 7th in Los Angeles. There is no place for this political discourse or lack of human decency." (Jennifer Carnahan, Facebook , 5/30/17)

VIDEO: Franken Said Kathy Griffin's Stunt With A Decapitated Head Of The President, Was a "Mistake" But That He Will Still Do An Event With Griffin In July. "CAMEROTA: You're supposed to be appearing with her in July, can she recover from this? FRANKEN: Well I think she did the right thing. I think asking for forgiveness, and acknowledging, that this was a horrible mistake. And so, I think she can. CAMEROTA: And you're still going to appear with her? FRANKEN: Yes." ( Sen. Franken Is Still Standing By Kathy Griffin - Will Appear At Event With Her In July , 5/31/17)

Franken Also Released A Statement That He "Respects Her Right To Free Speech." "When KARE 11 asked Franken's office for a response, they provided this statement: 'Sen. Franken thinks Kathy Griffin is a talented comedian and respects her right to free speech, but believes this image was inappropriate and not the kind of thing that should be part of our national discourse.'" (Emily Haavik, "MN GOP Chair To Franken: Cancel Event With Kathy Griffin," KARE-11 [Minneapolis] , 5/30/17)

Franken Is Familiar With This Kind Of Rhetoric - In 2004, He Joked About Al Qaeda Killing President Bush

VIDEO: At The 2004 Convention, Franken Joked With A Sign Language Interpreter About Al Qaeda Plans To Kill President Bush. FRANKEN: "You know what would have been really a funny, stupid thing for you to do? Would have been like: Al Qaeda friends of mine. I've scoped out the place. The way to get the President is to come through the kitchen which is downstairs." (Al Franken, Comments At 2004 Republican National Convention , Posted 10/31/08) (0:02 - 0:21)

IN 2015, FRANKEN BOYCOTTED NETANYAHU'S SPEECH TO A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE HIM "UNCOMFORTABLE" TO ATTEND

In 2015, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Delivered A Speech To A Joint Session Of Congress And Some Democrats Refused To Attend. "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to deliver one of the most controversial speeches to a joint session of Congress by a foreign leader ever, and Vice President Biden and a number of top Democrats won't be attending. Netanyahu is expected to criticize the White House's negotiations on Iran's nuclear program in his March 3 speech. While Biden has cited a scheduling conflict, other Democrats are staying away from the speech to protest what they see as an attack on President Obama. Congressional Democrats are angry that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) invited Netanyahu to speak to Congress without first telling the White House. Obama has said he will not meet with Netanyahu during the visit because it will occur two weeks before Israeli elections are set to take place." (Mike Lillis, "Whip List: 56 Democrats To Skip Netanyahu Speech To Congress," The Hill , 2/9/15)

Franken Boycotted And Said He'd Be "Uncomfortable" Being A Part Of Netanyahu's Speech To A Joint Session Of Congress. "Sen. Al Franken (Minn.) - 'This has unfortunately become a partisan spectacle, both because of the impending Israeli election and because it was done without consulting the Administration,' said Sen. Franken in a statement. 'I'd be uncomfortable being part of an event that I don't believe should be happening. I'm confident that, once this episode is over, we can reaffirm our strong tradition of bipartisan support for Israel.'"
