That Time Dems Thought A Gov. Shutdown Was “Reckless” “Hostage-Taking”

- April 27, 2017

Democrats Are Threatening A Government Shutdown If Republicans Plan A Health Care Vote. "Congressional Democrats are saying they'll oppose a measure to keep the government running another week if Republicans plan a health care vote between now and Saturday, Democratic aides told CNN." (Dierdre Walsh, Ted Barrett and Lauren Fox, "Dems Threaten To Oppose Bill To Prevent Shutdown If Health Care Vote Happens Before Saturday," CNN, 4/27/17)

In The Past Democrats Have Strongly Rejected The Idea Of A Government Shutdown

In 2013, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) Stated That "A Shutdown Is Not A Tactic, It's Not A Strategy…" "'We have [not] a matter of days, but hours left to prevent our government from shutting down. A shutdown is not a tactic, it's not a strategy, it is a failure for this country. Let us not be the country whose representatives cannot work together to fulfill the most basic function of government.'" (Rep. Steny Hoyer, Congressional Record , 9/28/13)

President Obama Claimed That There Is No Reason To Play Partisan Politics When It Comes To A Government Shutdown If "There's A Law You Don't Like." "'Obama said that a shutdown 'does not have to happen' and can be prevented if House Republicans agree to pass the Senate's version of a funding bill before midnight tonight. 'You don't get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you're supposed to be doing anyway' he said. 'Or just because there's a law there that you don't like.'" (Carrie Dann, "Obama To GOP: 'You Don't Get To Extract A Ransom For Doing Your Job,'" NBC News , 9/30/13)

Previously, Senator Christopher Coons (D-DE) Claimed That The Threat Of A Government Shutdown Was "Hostage-Taking" And "Reckless, Dangerous And Irresponsible." "As relieved as I am that we have brought this latest manufactured crisis to an end, I remain enormously frustrated that it ever got this far. Hostage-taking is not governing. Sixteen days of a shutdown government, at least $24 billion in economic losses, and rattled global markets were collateral damage in a conflict led by a small group of extremist Republicans. It was reckless, dangerous, and irresponsible, and I have heard from an array of Delawareans who agree that this is no way to govern. I hope that those responsible have learned their lesson and will not use our economy as a political bargaining chip again." (Press Release, "Senator Coons Votes To End Government Shutdown And Avert Default," Senator Christopher Coons , 10/16/13)

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) Called A Government Shutdown "Irresponsible" When It Comes To "…Hold[ing] The Nation's Budget Hostage Over A Single Ideological Issue." "In Congress' upper chamber, U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) said it's irresponsible for Republicans to hold the nation's budget hostage over a single ideological issue. In a conference call with reporters, Warner sounded dismayed by the unprecedented actions of some of his congressional colleagues, calling this a 'horrific day' for the nation and Virginia." (Trevor Baratko, "Partisan Cripples Congress, Government Shuts Down," Loudon Times-Mirror , 10/1/13)

State Representative Niki Tsongas (D-WA) Called A Government Shutdown An Example Of Members Of Congress "Not Exercising Their Job In A Responsible Way." "'I think we all know our colleagues across the aisle had an opportunity to bring a straightforward bill,' U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, a Lowell Democrat, said Tuesday morning. Tsongas said she's also proposed changes to President Obama's health care law, but that there's 'a reasonable and rational way of doing it.' 'They're not exercising their job in a responsible way,' Tsongas said of Republicans." (Grant Welker, "Tsongas, Tierney: 'Irresponsible GOP' Caused Shutdown," Lowell Sun, 10/1/13)

Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) Stated That The Country "Cannot Afford Another [Shutdown]." "This shutdown caused financial hardship for many workers & their families. Our country cannot afford another event of this magnitude." (Maxine Waters, Twitter Feed , 10/16/13)

Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) Called The Potential For Government Shutdown In 2010 "An Extreme Position Of Obstruction That's Not Going To Do Anything But Take Us Backwards." "Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine (at left) and Vice Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz harshly criticized Republicans in a conference call Tuesday for raising the prospect of a government shutdown if the GOP takes over the House in November, calling the prospect of a shutdown 'reckless and dangerous.' 'It's an extreme position of obstruction that's not going to do anything but take us backwards,' Kaine said." (Lucy Madison, "Democrats Spotlight GOP Talk Of Government Shutdown," CBS News , 9/14/10)

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) Stated That A Potential Shutdown Hurts The "Middle Class.": "We don't need another unnecessary, wasteful shutdown or a budget that hurts the middle class. Republicans must realize it's #TimeToNegotiate " (Bob Menendez, Twitter Feed , 9/8/15)
