The Clinton Double Standard

Apparently Campaign $$ And Political Support Influence Everyone Whose Last Name Isn't Clinton

This Morning On CNN's New Day, Clinton Campaign Manager Robby Mook Claimed Sanders "Stood By The Gun Lobby Repeatedly" After They "Spent A Lot Of Money To Defeat His Opponents," Sander's "Owed The NRA A Lot." CLINTON CAMPAIGN MANAGER ROBBY MOOK: "That is simply not true. And I don't think Senator Sanders has been sincere here in New York which is facing serious problems with guns being trafficked from Vermont and other states. He's not being sincere when he doesn't explain--is not explaining why he voted against universal background checks five times. So, I think he has a lot of explaining to do to the voters here in New York about that issue." CNN JOHN BERMAN: "What do you think he is not being sincere about, specifically?" MOOK: "Well, he is not being sincere that he stood with the gun lobby, repeatedly. They called this their number one issue--" BERMAN: "They say he's no -- he's no NRA guy, the NRA does. They say Bernie Sanders isn't with us." MOOK: "They certainly spent a lot of money to defeat his opponent in his 1990 election when he first got to congress. He owed them a lot. For his first election, and when they came to him and said our most important vote this year in the congress is a vote for immunity from liability suits to gun manufacturers, he voted with them." BERMAN: "Robby Mook. Great to have you here. We will see you on April fourth, big CNN debate." MOOK: "Absolutely, April 4th." ( CNN's New Day, 4/5/16)

Sanders Has A D-Minus Rating From The NRA. "Sanders said he has a 'D-minus grade' from the NRA. He's accurately referring to the most recent assessment from the gun lobby group in 2012. The NRA has not issued a more recent evaluation for Sanders for the 2016 primary election." (Katie Sanders, "Bernie Sanders' NRA Report Card: D-Minus Is Most Recent Grade," PolitiFact, 1/20/16)

When Clinton Is Asked About Money Or Political Support Influencing Her, She Changes Her Tune Sharply, Feigning Outrage At The Mere Suggestion

At An MSNBC Democrat Debate, Clinton Chided Sanders For "The Very Artful Smear" That His Campaign Had Been "Carrying Out" When It Came To Highlighting Her Special Interest Ties. CLINTON: "Senator Sanders has said he wants to run a positive campaign, I've tried to keep my disagreements over issues, that's how it should be. But time and time again, by innuendo, by insinuation, there is this attack that he has been putting forth, which really comes down to, you know, anybody who ever took donations, or speaking fees, from any interest group has to be bought. And I just absolutely reject that, Senator. And I really don't think these kinds of attacks by insinuation are worthy of you. And enough is enough. If you have got something to say. Say it, directly. But you will not find that I ever changed a view or a vote because of any donation that I ever received. I have stood up and I have represented my constituents to the best of my ability. And I am very proud of that. So I think it's time to end the very artful smear that you and your campaign have been carrying out in recent weeks. And let's talk about the issues that divide us." (Hillary Clinton, MSNBC Democrat Debate, Durham, NH 2/4/16)

Clinton: "I Don't Think, Based On My 35 Years Of Fighting For What I Believe In, Anybody Seriously Believes I'm Going To Be Influenced By A Lobbyist Or A Particular Interest." "Asked whether she would agree with that, Clinton said, 'I don't think, based on my 35 years of fighting for what I believe in, anybody seriously believes I'm going to be influenced by a lobbyist or a particular interest.'" (Dan Balz and Jose Antonio Vargas, "Bloggers Give Clinton A Mixed Reception," The Washington Post, 8/5/07)

Without A Hint Of Irony, Clinton Said Wall Street And Big Oil Has Too Much Influence And "Will Fight Every Single Day To Even The Odds Against Them." CLINTON: "Wall Street and big financial interests, along with the drug companies, the insurance companies, big oil, the gun lobby, they all have too much influence and I will fight every single day to even the odds against them." (Hillary Clinton, Remarks, Denver, CO, 2/13/16)

Clinton Has Claimed To Be Unaware She Ever Received Donations From Fossil Fuel Companies, Saying If They Have "They Certainly Haven't Made That Much Of An Impression..." " After a rally in Iowa last December, Clinton claimed to be unaware she ever received donations from fossil fuel companies. 'Well, I don't know that I ever have. I'm not exactly one of their favorites,' she said. 'Have I? OK, well, I'll check on that. They certainly haven't made that much of an impression on me if I don't even know it.'" (Alex Emmons, "Hillary Clinton Wants To Regulate Fracking, But Still Accepts A Lot Of Fracking Money," The Intercept, 3/9/16)

In February, Clinton Denied Taking Campaign Money From The Fossil Fuel Industry, Saying Any Donations She Received "Must Have Put It In The Wrong Envelope..." QUESTIONER: "Hello, thank you for being with us this afternoon. You've taken many strong stands and actions for human rights, women's rights, and education in your campaign. These are actions which Republicans have often overlooked or ignored. You've also said that you support renewable energy in our country but have taken over $150,000 from the big oil and gas industries. These are industries which are in direct conflict with your interest in renewable energies, and I'm wondering if you'd be willing to take one step further away from the Republicans and take a stand against any more [garbled] campaign contributions from them?" CLINTON: "Yeah, I don't even know what you're referring to, but big oil knows I'm not their friend, so I can't imagine. They must have put it in the wrong envelope, because I've been very clear about that. And I want to take away all their subsidies, I've been public about that. We're going to move those $6 billion a year into clean renewable energy. You know, I will certainly take a hard look at that. It is not something that I've paid any attention to, because they know where I stand, and they know what I will do." (Hillary Clinton, Remarks At Town Hall, Dover, NH, 2/3/16)

After A Campaign Rally, Clinton Yelled At An Attendee Who Asked Her To Pledge To Not Accept Money From The Fossil Fuel Industry, Accusing The Questioner Of Spreading Sanders Propaganda. QUESTION: "Thank you for tackling climate change, will you act on your word to reject fossil fuel money in the future in your campaign?" CLINTON: "I do not have, I have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies…" QUESTION: "…and registered lobbyists?" CLINTON: "I'm so sick! I'm so sick of the Sanders' campaign lying about this, I'm sick of it!" (Hillary Clinton, Remarks At Rally At SUNY Purchase, Purchase, NY 3/31/16)
