The Importance Of Being Earnest

- January 5, 2017

Today, Outgoing Press Secretary Josh Earnest Said He Had Only "[Overshot] The Mark A Little Bit" In Claiming Obama Had Created 900,000 Manufacturing Jobs. REPORTER: "Tuesday we were talking about the President and the economy and having created 900,000 manufacturing jobs. We were doing some number crunching and it seems to be a little bit higher than that which we have come up with. Can you sort of help me square the difference? I think we came up with 807 (thousand) or something." WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: "Yea, I think what I said was nearly 900,000. I did overshoot the mark a little bit. I was just working off of memory. I didn't have the numbers in front of me." (Josh Earnest, Remarks At A White House Press Briefing , Washington, DC, 1/5/17)

The Facts: The U.S. Has Lost Over 300,000 Manufacturing Jobs Since Obama Became President

Since Obama Took Office In January 2009, The Nation Has Lost 301,000 Manufacturing Jobs. ( Bureau Of Labor Statistics , Accessed 1/5/17)

  • In December Of 2016, The U.S. Had 12,260,000 Manufacturing Jobs, Down From 12,561,000 In January 2009. ( Bureau Of Labor Statistics , Accessed 1/5/17)

Last Month, The Washington Post's Fact Checker Gave Earnest Two Pinnochios For Making The False Claim That The Obama Administration Had Created 800,000 Manufacturing Jobs. "If the White House is going to speak about the manufacturing job gains during Obama's presidency, it needs to acknowledge that despite his best efforts, the number of manufacturing jobs still is below the level when he started. We agree that that it might make more sense to start counting from the end of the recession (June 2009) or the low point in manufacturing (Feb. 2010), but that's not how Earnest phrased it. Earnest clearly left the impression that during Obama's presidency, the number of manufacturing jobs increased by more than 800,000. But actually, the number of jobs has fallen by 300,000." (Glenn Kessler, "The White House's Claim That 800,000 Manufacturing Jobs Were Added During Obama's Presidency," The Washington Post , 12/9/16)

Earnest Was Also Chided By FactCheck.Org For His Claim, Which Said Earnest "Ignored All Of The Job Losses That Occurred During The First 13 Months Of Obama's Presidency." "Manufacturing employment was 12,258,000 in October 2016, according to the most recent estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's down 303,000 from the number employed in January 2009, the same month that Obama was sworn in as president. To make his point, Earnest just ignored all of the job losses that occurred during the first 13 months of Obama's presidency." (D'Angelo Gore, "Obama's Record On Manufacturing Jobs," FactCheck.Org , 12/1/16)
