Stimulus

Obama’s stimulus plan failed. After spending over $800 billion, Americans are still unemployed and our government is deeper in debt. Instead of using the stimulus to rebuild America’s decaying infrastructure, Obama invested in his pet projects. Republicans understand the importance of creating an environment conducive to job-growth.

These regression results provide stark evidence that cyclical factors have been crucial in explaining the recent decline in prime-age LFPR. The coefficient on the lagged change in prime-age unemployment is highly significant (t-statistic of -3.9); that is, the state-level data exhibit a strong negative correlation between changes in LFPR and lagged changes in unemployment for prime-age adults. In contrast, the regression intercept is not statistically significant from zero (t-statistic of -0.97), indicating that the data provides no support whatsoever for structural interpretations of the drop in prime-age LFPR. In effect, the state-level data indicates that the aggregate decline in prime-age LFPR since 2007 can be fully explained by the persistent shortfall in labor demand…... Continue Reading »

They Said It! Former Obama Econ Adviser Says Obama "At The Bottom Of The Pack" For Econ Growth

- October 18, 2012

Obama Auto Bailout Czar Steven Rattner Said That Obama Is At The "Bottom Of The Pack…When It Comes To Plain Economic Growth." MSNBC's MIKA BRZEZINSKI: "Yeah. We looked at post-debate polls that suggested people seemed to favor the president's performance in the debate, but they gave Mitt Romney higher marks for his ability to handle the economy. So Steve Rattner is here with charts this morning to explain why that may have come out that way. Charts on the economy. Steve, take it away." OBAMA CAR CZAR STEVEN RATTNER: "Sure. Well, as we all know, the president is facing - has been facing - a pretty stiff economic headwind. And what I want to do is lay out how his economic situation compares across a bunch of different indicators to those of other people who have run for president recently. And you'll see interesting results in terms of how the economy's performed. So one measure people often look at is real GDP which is obviously how much has the economy grown. So for each of these presidents we start with the beginning of their first term, and then we progress ourselves out to their re-election point. And what you can see not surprisingly, because we talk a lot about the weak economy, is that by this measure, Obama is really pretty much at the bottom of the pack. And the other four presidents that have preceded him all had substantially better performance when it comes to plain economic growth. Now, economic growth alone is not a recipe for re-election, as you can see, because Bush 41 did not get re-elected, and Jimmy Carter, of course, did not get re-elected." Obama's Redistribution Presidency

- September 19, 2012

Obama: "I Actually Believe In Redistribution." "Let me just close by saying as we think about the policy research surrounding the issues that I just named, the policy research for the working poor, broadly defined. I think that what we are going to have to do is somehow resuscitate the notion that government action can be effective at all. There has been a systematic - I don't think it's too strong to call it a propaganda campaign against the possibility of government action and its efficacy. And I think some of it has been deserved. Chicago Housing Authority has not been a model of good policymaking. And neither necessarily have been the Chicago Public Schools. What that means that as we try to resuscitate this notion that we're all in this together, leave nobody behind. We do have to be innovative in thinking how - what are the delivery systems that are actually effective and meet people where they live? And my suggestion I guess would be that the trick - and this is one of the few areas where I think there are technical issues that have to be dealt with as opposed to just political issues. I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence, facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot." ... They Said It! Obama Press Secretary Jen Psaki Defends "Incomplete"

During A Press Gaggle, Obama Campaign Traveling Press Secretary Jen Psaki Said Obama's Grading Of Himself On The Economy As "Incomplete" And His "Desire To Do More Is Far Better Than A Failing Grade." REPORTER: "But as a recipient of many 'incompletes' myself, I know that it's not a passing grade. (Laughter.) So how do you make your pitch to the American public that an incomplete deserves a reelection?" JEN PSAKI: "Well, I think what an incomplete means is that there's more work that he wants to do for the middle class and for the American people. The alternative is to go back to the old playbook of failed policies and failing grades, and that's what Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to do. That's where they want to lead this country. So you have a choice: Either you have somebody who has accomplished a great deal, who has helped bring the economy back from the brink of collapse and still wants to fight more for the middle class and do more for the American people, or you have the Romney/Ryan team that wants to go back to the failed, rotten policies of the past.So I think an incomplete and a desire to do more is far better than a failing grade."... They point to millions of dollars meant to develop a domestic clean-energy industry that instead landed in the hands of foreign businesses. An April 2010 study by the Energy Department found that 60 percent of the 40 largest wind farms then financed by the stimulus relied on foreign manufacturers for their central components, including turbines.” ... Highlights From RNC Conference Call on Obama’s Claim that the Private Sector is “Doing Fine”

- June 12, 2012

"President Obama of course asserted somewhat infamously now that the private economy is 'doing fine' and then subsequently backtracked from that. I think that one reason why the remarks have received so much attention is they kind of reveal, if you look around the remarks, the president's real obsession with the idea that the way to improve the economy is to increase the size of the government and increase government employment. And even though he's been back tracking from the remarks, I think that the president's team is still guilty of abusing the data a little bit. And the purpose of this call is to look at the facts as to how the economy is doing and to look at even the facts in the jobs report and put them in some kind of historical context and to do so in a way that is clear enough so you can see the little trick they are playing, even though they are backing away from the 'doing fine' remarks to try and defend it with misleading statistics."... CNN’s CANDY CROWLEY: “Aren't people also saying look we did almost $1 trillion in stimulus spending, and you all at that time said oh, unemployment won't go above 8%, GDP will be a lot higher than it is now and it isn't, and so now we need another leap with the jobs bill.” VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: “No. Look, here’s the deal. Nobody can look you in the eye and tell you that the Recovery Act and that stimulus did not create jobs and did not do very good things for the economy.” ... Continue Reading »

Former Obama Economic Advisor Austan Goolsbee Is Not So Sure About Cash For Clunkers Anymore

- October 20, 2011

Former Obama Economic Advisor Austan Goolsbee: “I think, in the original Recovery Act, because we didn’t know is this going to be short or long, it had some of all of that. It had some infrastructure; it had some short-run things. So, if you look at the Cash for Clunkers or first home buyer tax credit, those were geared more to try to shift it from let’s say 2010 into 2009. Given that it’s taken this long, I don’t think you would do that short stuff.” ... Continue Reading »

Off The Mark

- September 9, 2011

Today, the Obama White House is touting the analysis of economist Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics, which predicts that Obama’s new $447 billion stimulus bill will add 1.9 million jobs and lower unemployment by one percent. While that would certainly be welcome news, it is worth recalling that in July 2010, Mark Zandi and Alan Blinder penned an analysis of the stimulus titled “How The Great Recession Was Brought To An End.” If the Great Recession was actually bought to an end, we obviously would not be discussing another massive stimulus package. As you can see below, the predictions they made then were in some cases twice as optimistic as what has actually occurred.... Continue Reading »

An Important Note On White House Stats…

The Obama White House is known for throwing out a lot of statistical claims about the apparent “success” of their policies. One such claim we are all familiar with is that 95 percent of working families received a tax cut under the $825 billion stimulus. Pressed recently to back up this claim with validation, the White House pointed to an outside report. Contacted by The Washington Post, one of the report co-authors said their source was actually an Obama White House fact sheet. In the coming days, we’re going to hear a lot of facts and figures from the White House. Whether its “saved” or “created” or “received”, just know that the Obama White House’s outside validation may just end up being the Obama White House after all.... Continue Reading »

They Said It! Liberal Economist Jeffrey Sachs Says Obama Never Had A Plan

- August 19, 2011

Jeffrey Sachs: “So we’re almost three years into this administration and there’s never been a plan and that’s what everybody feels. The president didn’t lead. He waited. The quintessential image sadly of the administration that I supported and hoped for much better is the president waiting by the phone to hear what Congress calls to tell him. It doesn’t work in this country that way, it’s not a matter that it’s August, it’s a matter that it’s August 2011. So we’ve been drifting for a very long time and we’ve been drifting down now. And we had a short term plan that failed. A short term stimulus that was supposed to get the economy back on track but it failed. And now we have nothing behind it. And we have no agreements and no leadership and frankly, I do think it’s pretty odd the president’s on vacation right now. Normally, I wouldn’t care about such things, but the world markets are in deep crisis. It’s no joke, this isn’t just an August up and down little blip, this is a very serious situation. ” ... Research Note: Obama’s Economists Downgrade Their Stimulus

- July 5, 2011

You may have missed the Council of Economic Advisors’ (CEA) quarterly report on the stimulus that was released as part of Friday’s news dump from the White House but there were a few key factoids that should not go unnoticed. Buried in the report is the fact that with $666 billion spent so far, Obama’s CEA, the Congressional Budget Office and Moody’s Mark Zandi have all downgraded their assessment of the stimulus’ effect on jobs. In the third quarter of 2010, the CEA said the stimulus “saved or created” 2.68 million jobs. Today, in the first quarter of 2011, the CEA has reduced that number to 2.39 million “saved or created.” It seems that the White House projections are going in the wrong direction and despite the administration’s models of “saved or created”, the fact is that 1.8 million jobs have been lost since the stimulus passed in February 2009 according to BLS. See the full breakdown from RNC Research below:... Continue Reading »

Most of the money has been spent, and data suggest that overall regional job growth did occur as a result of the massive infusion of capital. But a review by The Washington Times of figures provided by D.C. officials shows that the city spent hundreds of millions of dollars without being able to demonstrate any significant improvement in the city’s jobs outlook.” ...
