When Gun Control Champ Clinton Channeled Her Inner Annie Oakley

- November 13, 2015

In 2008, Clinton Defended The Second Amendment As A Part Of America's "Culture." “'You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught me how to shoot when I was a little girl," she said. 'You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It's part of culture. It's part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it's an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter.'" (Peter Hamby, "Clinton Touts Her Experience With Guns," CNN's Political Ticker, 4/12/08)

In 2008, Clinton Sent Out A Mailer That "Attacked Obama For First Coming Out In Favor Of A Ban On Handguns" And For Saying That Small Town People "Cling To Guns." "The mailer attacked Obama for first coming out in favor of a ban on handguns while speaking in Chicago, then for telling an Idaho crowd that he supported the Second Amendment, and finally for a comment he made about 'small towns in Pennsylvania' who 'cling to guns or religion.' The campaign sent out the mailer in May, a month after Clinton called Obama's 'cling to guns' remark 'elitist,' saying that guns were 'part of culture,' and telling the story of how her father taught her to shoot in her childhood."(Christopher Massie, "That Time Hillary Clinton's Campaign Attacked Obama In 2008 For Flip-Flopping On Guns," BuzzFeed, 10/12/15)

Now Clinton Attacks Guns In the United States As “Way Out Of Balance”

Clinton Now Says "That Gun Culture In The U.S. Has Become 'Way Out Of Balance,'" And That "We've Got To Rein In What Has Become An Almost Article Of Faith That Anybody Can Have A Gun Anywhere, Anytime." "Potential 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that gun culture in the U.S. has become 'way out of balance.' 'I think that we've got to rein in what has become an almost article of faith that anybody can have a gun anywhere, anytime,' Clinton said at the National Council for Behavioral Health conference in Maryland." (Laura Stampler, "Hillary Clinton Blasts 'Way Out Of Balance' Gun Culture," Time, 5/6/14)

In November 2015, Clinton Launched A New TV Ad Touting Her Support For Gun Control."Hillary Clinton's campaign is releasing a new ad on Tuesday that focuses on the effort to reduce gun violence, an issue the Democratic frontrunner has made central to the nominating contest. The entire ad features Clinton speaking at a town hall meeting and calling for gun control measures. 'This epidemic of gun violence knows no boundaries. Between 88 and 92 people a day are killed by guns,' Clinton says in the ad. 'We need to close the loopholes and support universal background checks. How many people have to die before we actually act?'" (Sam Frizell, "Hillary Clinton Calls For Gun Control In New Ad," Time, 11/3/15)
