Another Clinton Flip Flop?

- November 5, 2015

Clinton’s “Always Changing” Science On Yucca Mountain Opens The Door To A Flip Flop As She Raises Big Money From Its Supporters

According To Jon Ralston, Clinton Has “Left Room To Backpedal” On Yucca Mountain By Qualifying Her Opposition And Saying “The Science Is Always Changing.” “Oh? I suggested she was equivocating, and Clinton retorted: ‘No, I’m not because I was against it based on the research that was made available. We do need to figure out what we’re going to do with nuclear waste and therefore I would look to leaders who are independent of certain industry pressures or certain political or geographic pressures.’ And then this: ‘Well, it’s off the table now based on what I know. I think science is always changing. But based on what I know, where it is, the geology of where it is, it’s off the table.’ Based on what I know? The science is always changing? If I didn’t know better, I’d think Madame Secretary was opening the door a crack to changing her previous position.” (Jon Ralston, “Ralston Reports: Hillary Firmly Anti-Yucca – For Now,” Reno Gazette-Journal, 11/3/15)

As Clinton Opens The Door To A Flip Flop, She Happily Accepts Money From Yucca Mountain Contractors And Supporters

In September, Clinton Attended A Fundraiser At The Home Of Jim Bernhard, A Yucca Mountain Contractor. “The former secretary of state fundraised at the home of a Yucca Mountain contractor in September. In addition, she has welcomed a number of bundlers who have actively pushed to keep the nuclear dump open.” (Sarah Westwood, “Clinton Fundraised With Yucca Mountain Contractor,” The Washington Examiner, 11/4/15)

Clinton Equivocates As Yucca Mountain Supporters And Lobbyists Continue To Send Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars To Clinton’s Campaign. “Tony Podesta, a DC superlobbyist whose brother chairs Clinton’s presidential campaign, has bundled more than $130,000 to her coffers. By coincidence, since 2012, Podesta’s company, The Podesta Group, has been paid $540,000 to lobby for – wait for it – the Nuclear Energy Institute, the prime mover behind putting the dump at Yucca, according to federal disclosure forms. (The forms do not indicate the group lobbied for the dump, but waste disposal is one of NEI’s primary concerns.) Since 2013, The Podesta Group has been paid more than $330,000 to lobby for Bechtel Corp., which happens to be building the mothballed (for now) repository not far from Las Vegas. Four other bundlers, Brian Wolff ($26,000), Ingrid Duran and Catherine Pino ($72,000) and Justin Gray ($41,000), are connected to the Edison Electric Institute, another trade association pushing the dump in Nevada. Wolff is with EEI, Duran and Pino work for a firm lobbying for EEI, and Gray’s company has been paid $230,000 in the last couple of years to advocate for EEI (not on the dump) and once lobbied for – wait for it again – Exelon, Obama’s old friends whom Clinton all but painted as evil in 2008.” (Jon Ralston, “Ralston Reports: Hillary Firmly Anti-Yucca – For Now,” Reno Gazette-Journal, 11/3/15)

Clinton Struck A Different Tone In 2008, Unequivocally Opposing Yucca Mountain And Attacking Obama For Accepting Donations From Its Supporters

In 2008 Clinton Said That When She Is President “Yucca Mountain Will Be Off The Table Forever.” “Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton put a national spotlight on Nevada's signature issue Wednesday, holding a discussion on Yucca Mountain before a full contingent of national media. ‘When I am president, Yucca Mountain will be off the table forever,’ Clinton said. The New York senator said the proposed nuclear waste repository, about 100 miles from Las Vegas, was a national issue, because spent fuel rods would be transported through many states. She criticized the Bush administration for continuing the project despite botched science.” (Molly Ball, “Clinton Declares Yucca Mountain ‘Will Be Off The Table Forever,’” Las Vegas Review-Journal, 1/17/08)

Clinton Attacked Obama In  2008 For Exelon Corporation, One Of The Biggest Supporters Of Yucca Mountain, Being One Of His Largest Financial Contributors. SEN. CLINTON: “You know, Barack has one of his biggest supporters in terms of funding, the Exelon Corporation, which has spent millions of dollars trying to make Yucca Mountain the waste depository. John was in favor of it twice when he voted to override President Clinton’s veto and then voted for it again.” (Sen. Hillary Clinton, Remarks At The Democratic Debate In Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 1/15/08)
